How To Stop Overthinking And Just Take Action

I was one of the biggest overthinkers you could meet and would over-analyze everything, and as a result, take zero action.

I was stuck in my head, and it’s honestly one of the worst places to be. All you do is think about how bad things are, and how everything should or could go wrong. You tell yourself that you don’t deserve anything good because you are not good enough.

You are essentially putting yourself down before anyone else can, and it’s an awful way to be.

Over the years I have reduced my overthinking massively, to the point where it barely plays a part in my life anymore, but only after experiencing some extremely dark times.

In this blog post, I will go over how I reduced my own overthinking, and how you can do the same.

STEP 1: NOTICE OVERTHINKING

This is something that rarely happens to me anymore, but occasionally it still creeps in. When I notice that it’s happening I stop myself, and ask myself ‘Do I really want to be thinking like this?’. Then I just take action on whatever it is that I had on my mind.

STEP 2: ASK ‘IS THIS WORTH OVERTHINKING’?

This step takes the longest time to master, but it’s certainly worth it. Whenever you find yourself overthinking something ask yourself if it is really worth your time. Is this something that will affect your life in one way or another in the future, or is it something that can be pushed to one side? Is this an event that will happen in a few month’s time, or even years away?

I used to overthink everything if I thought it would have any kind of negative effect on me. But once you get so bogged down with things that are potentially going to happen in the future, you miss out on a lot of what’s going on around you right now.

STEP 3: CUT OUT YOUR DISTRACTIONS

You need to be able to cut out distractions. When it’s time to go to work put your phone to the side. Block out an hour straight and after that hour take a fifteen-minute break. When you’re taking this break, take your phone out again and check Facebook/Twitter ,etc. These things are designed to distract people, as it’s a way for companies to make money from advertisements.

These social media platforms train our brains to not have a long attention span, so if you can’t work for an hour straight yet start with a half-hour or even fifteen minutes.

Being able to focus for a long time is a skill that can be learned, but you have to start somewhere.

It’s almost like a muscle, the more you practice it, the stronger it gets.

STEP 4: FOCUS MORE ON DISCIPLINE AND LESS ON MOTIVATION

Motivation is great, but if you pay attention you’ll realize there are days you aren’t motivated at all no matter what you do. That’s why you can’t focus on motivation only.

That’s where discipline comes in. Even when you don’t feel like doing something, discipline is what will get you where you need to be.

Do you think Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali, Serena Williams, Elon Musk were all motivated every single day? Probably not. What separates them is their ability to focus and not take a day off no matter what they are doing or how motivated they feel.

There is this great quote by Jocko Willink that says, “Discipline equals freedom” and I completely agree with it. When you can force yourself to do things when you don’t want to, it’s like the universe opens up and gives you infinite possibilities.

STEP 5: BE GRATEFUL

This is not something I perfected overnight, but rather something that I am constantly working on. You have to start off by identifying things to be grateful for. Every time you find yourself slipping into negativity think about what you are grateful for.

Try to keep a list of things that you’re grateful for somewhere, and then take it out all the time when you feel your mind slipping. This will help you get back on track, and put things into perspective.

STEP 6: SET GOALS AND MANAGE EXPECTATIONS

You have to stop overthinking by setting realistic goals for yourself or whatever it is you are doing. You can’t go after something thinking that there is no chance of failing, because what this will do is set you up for failure.

One example would be to reach 100 blog posts in one year,or to film 50 Youtube videos.

You also have to create an outline of how you’re going to do this. Have a clear research process for writing a blog post, and have a plan for your Youtube videos.

One thing that will eliminate doubt is to learn from others that are already successful, so study the people you want to be like and model your plan after theirs. If the person you want to be like has a course consider buying it.

With the internet, you have access to infinite knowledge and there is no excuse not to learn from others. Do everything in your power to make that into a reality, by setting goals for yourself and then following up with them.

STEP 7: TAKE CARE OF YOUR MIND AND BODY

This is a bit of a cliché, but it’s also very true. You have to eat healthy and wwork outif you want to be able to focus for long periods of time.

I cannot stress this enough because it can actually serve as a distraction if you’re not feeling well or your body isn’t working properly. I used to skip the gym and just go straight to work, but after a while, I noticed that my mind wasn’t as sharp and I couldn’t focus as well.

I’ve been working out for about 2 -3 years now and it’s one of the best decisions I ever made. Not only do you feel better physically, but mentally as well.

CONCLUSION

We hope this helped you get on the right path when it comes to overthinking. If you struggle with overthinking, use the above steps. It definitely won’t be easy at first and you won’t be the best right away but over time you’ll feel guilty if you’re not being productive.
