Getting into freelancing sounds like a great idea because of the benefits. You’ll have the ability to choose what projects you work on, you can control how much you make in a sense, and you have control over your schedule.
But, is it as easy as it seems? In this blog post, we will go over what you need to know before starting a freelancing business and how hard it is.
Answer To The Question How Hard is It To Get Into Freelancing:
When it comes down to it, freelancing is as hard as you make it. There are many things you can do to make it harder, but there are also ways to make it easier.
Keep in mind, no matter what you do in life requires a learning curve. So almost anything may seem hard at first.
If you want freelancing to be easy for you you need to be prepared and invest in yourself. In the rest of this blog post, I will go over how to get started, the benefits of freelancing, and common mistakes.
Why Could Freelancing Be Hard For Some People?
There are many reasons freelancing could be hard for a lot of people.
You Don’t Have The Skills Necessary To Be Successful (Yet)
Jumping into Freelancing without any skills is the worst thing you can do. To expect to get jobs without any skills is like expecting to win the lottery without buying a ticket.
You need to follow your passion and work on developing new skills that will help you out in your freelancing journey. You can take classes or maybe even learn through tutorials online.
I do some freelance writing myself. It took me over two-hundred blog posts and a blogging course to even start thinking about doing writing for someone else.
Don’t rush the process and keep learning, then once you’re comfortable, start applying.
You Need To Get Work Under Your Belt Before You Charge A Lot
When first starting out you may need to charge a lot less than your worth to show how good of a service you offer.
There will be a time in your career when you can charge top dollar, but making it to that stage takes some time and practice.
For example, you may want to get twenty to thirty good reviews on Fiverr before you start raising your prices.
That leads to this next point.
You Need Patience
In most cases you’re going to need a lot of patience to become successful.
You’re going to have bumps in the road, but that is okay because it’s all apart of the journey.
You’re likely going to have to apply to hundreds of jobs before you get consistent work coming in regularly.
Develop Some Sales and Conversational Skills
If you don’t know how to communicate with people the right way or sell yourself, you won’t make any money.
You need to be a people person and know how to quickly get clients excited about your work.
Take some time to watch some youtube videos for inspiration for social interaction.
Once You Start, Don’t Stop Learning
In most cases, things change. The way you write in the beginning is the same way you should be writing to get traffic in a couple of years. You need to stay up to date with the latest methods and strategies because if you don’t, you will quickly become irrelevant.
What Are The Steps To Get Started In Freelancing?
So you want to be your own boss? That’s great! The first thing you need to do is find out what services you’re going to offer. This can be anything from coding websites, making logos, designing things, etc.
If you don’t have any skills, as stated above you need to invest a little bit of time in learning them.
Let’s pretend you do have the skills, the next thing you need to do is decide which sites you’re going to use to list yourself.
Fiverr
This is by far one of the best sites you can start on if you want to sell your services for five dollars. You can start on this platform today and make money.
Upwork
Upwork is one of the more popular sites for freelancers. There are hundreds of thousands of people using this site to find work.
You can post jobs or apply to open positions that clients are looking for.
Freelancer
This site isn’t as popular as Upwork but it still has a lot of opportunities you can apply for.
People who use this site pay less than those using Upwork so you can potentially get more of the work here.
Freelancer would be my second choice, after Upwork.
People Per Hour
This is another site I’ve heard of and it looks like a pretty good resource. It seems to have a good amount of work on there from what I’ve been able to see.
Eventually, you can work on getting clients through all of these sites, but you should master one or two first in order to keep consistent work coming in.
The next step would be to diversify your skills. You can learn other skills and use them to get other types of jobs on these sites.
This will limit the amount of time of not having work and can help you get more clients on a consistent basis.
For example, I also offer Instagram work and a keyword service in order to get more work.
What is the easiest freelance job?
When it comes to easy jobs to apply for, there are a few that come to mind. Keep in mind these won’t pay that much because there are people out there willing to do them for very cheap.
Social Media Manager
If you have a basic understanding of social media, this may be the perfect job for you.
You can do stuff like run contests on Instagram and Facebook to get more followers, interact with people in your target demographic, etc.
To get hired, you may need to show proof of your pages that have high followings.
Virtual Assistant
This is another easy job to get hired for.
You can show proof of having experience with administrative tasks or even offer to work for free to gain clientele.
Once you build up a good resume, clients will be more than willing to hire you because they know how much work it takes to find an assistant.
Do freelancers make good money?
Some people make a full-time income and others make pretty decent side income doing freelancing. The number one thing is to stick it out and do the best you can.
The longer you stick to it the easier it will come. Plus, if you truly love what you do, it won’t even feel like work.
Conclusion
Freelancing is not for everyone, but if you’re willing to put in the time and effort necessary then it can be one of the best decisions you ever make.
