If you’re trying to decide whether to start a blog or a vlog, you might be wondering which one is easier to earn money with. After all, isn’t that why most people start a blog or vlog in the first place (other than passion)? So which is easier to earn money with?
Blogging is typically easier to earn money with than vlogging because there’s more of a barrier to entry for vlogging. With vlogging, you also have to make people interested in your personality. With blogging, all you have to do is answer questions that lead your reader in the right direction and they don’t need to even know who you are.
On top of that, there are more barriers to entry when it comes to vlogging which makes blogging easier to make money. Below we will go over those in more detail.
Vlogging Is More Time Consuming
The first barrier to entry for making money vlogging is that it’s just more time-consuming than blogging. You have to film yourself, edit the videos, and then post them online. This can take anywhere from a few hours to an entire day depending on the length and quality of the video.
Blogging, on the other hand, can be done in as little as 30 minutes per day. You can sit down, write a quick article, and hit publish. It doesn’t have to be perfect and you don’t have to spend hours editing it.
Outsourcing Vlogs Is Hard
I’ve seen a lot of different YouTube videos claiming you could make a YouTube automation channel and outsource all the work. This sounds very expensive though. You have to outsource video creation, scriptwriting, editing, and more. The only thing you’re doing is uploading the videos.
With blogging, you can outsource writing articles, which is much cheaper than all of the stuff that comes with outsourcing for a YouTube channel.
So when it comes to scalability, blogging is much easier and cheaper to scale than vlogging.
You’re Limited To Your Expertise When It Comes To Blogging
If you’re a vlogger, you can only really talk about what you know. On the other hand when it comes to blogging, you could always hire writers that can write about topics outside of your expertise.
This gives you a lot more leeway when it comes to the topics you can cover on your blog, making it easier to find topics that people are searching for.
Now that we went over why blogging is a bit easier to get into, now let’s go into a bit more detail about which one can earn you more money.
Which Can Earn You More Money, Blogging or Vlogging?
There’s no true answer to this question. There are so many intricacies that go into both blogging and vlogging that it’s impossible to say which one can earn you more money.
It depends on a multitude of factors, including:
- The niche you’re in
- Your target audience
- The Monetization Methods You Use On Each\
- Your Personality & Skills
Let’s go over each one a little bit more.
The Niche You’re In
The niche you’re in can play a big role in whether blogging or vlogging can earn you more money. If you’re in a very popular niche, it’s going to be harder to stand out as a vlogger. This is because there are already so many bloggers in that niche that are established.
Also, some niches are more suited for video and some are more suited for text. For example, if you’re trying to review a product, a video might be more helpful than just reading about it. On the other hand, if you’re trying to teach someone a step by step guide, a blog post might be better.
Your Target Audience
This piggybacks off of the niche you’re in. Depending on your target audience, they might prefer one format over the other.
For example, if you’re targeting an older audience, they might prefer reading a blog post over watching a video. This is because they might not have the time to watch a video or they might not be as tech-savvy.
The Monetization Methods You Use On Each
You can get 20,000 visitors on a blog and 100,000 views on a YouTube video and still earn more money from the blog if you employ more monetization methods.
This is because there are just more monetization methods available for bloggers. You can have ads, sponsored posts, affiliate marketing, product reviews, and more.
Vloggers can also do a lot of these things, but it’s harder to work them into the video. For example, you could do a sponsored post on your blog, but it would be very hard to do a sponsored post in your video unless you make it very obvious that it’s an ad.
Your Personality & Skills
This is a big one. If you’re not naturally outgoing, it might be harder for you to vlog. You could force yourself to do it, but it’s going to be harder than if you’re just naturally good on camera.
At least if you’re not a good writer, you could outsource your blog posts. But if you’re not good on camera, there’s not much you can do other than practice and hope that you get better.
Why Not Do Both Eventually?
We don’t recommend that you try to do both blogging and vlogging at the same time when you’re just starting. It’s better to focus on one or the other so that you can learn the nuances of that before moving on to the other.
Eventually, you could make a blog post and then turn it into a video or make a video and then transcribe it into a blog post. But when you’re just starting, it’s better to focus on one so that you can give it your all.
Blogging Vs Vlogging In Google Trends
As you could see above, although video content is on the rise, blogging is still king.
In Summary
When it comes to which one is easier to start making money off of, blogging is going to be a bit easier. This is because of the barrier to entry when it comes to vlogging.
At the end of the day, both blogging and vlogging can be very profitable, it just depends on which one you’re better at and which one is a better fit for your niche.
