Can You Use Pixabay for Print On Demand?

What is Pixabay?

Pixabay is a collection of free images that can be used for commercial purposes.

The website was created in 2010 and has millions of pictures, vector graphics, illustrations, audio clips, videos and footage to choose from.

What is Print on Demand?

A print on demand service like TeeSpring or Redbubble will take your design, produce a limited number of products and then send them to the customer when they order.

Print on demand is different than mass production in that you do not need to set up an inventory for every product before it goes live.

This means you can make as many or as few of a product as you want and the inventory will only create when someone orders it.

Can You Download Pixabay Images and Sell Them?

It is against the terms and conditions of Pixabay to download images and then sell them.

This means if you want to use an image from there without editing it, it needs to be for personal or non-commercial purposes only. Unless you do one thing (Add Value).

If you are using a pixabay photo in your blog post, this does not count as commercial usage.

You Have To Add Value

If you would like to use a pixabay image for a design on a print on demand site or commercial use in general you can, but you have to add your own value.

You can do this by adding your own text to the design or rearranging parts of it in a way that adds your own style to the image.

So For example, if you find a picture of a cool bridge, or something of that sort. Pixabay doesn’t want you to just take that picture and resell it, you have to add your own art work to that photo in order to make it your own.

How Much Do You Have To Change?

Pixabay doesn’t really go into depth of how much you need to change in order for you to sell them.

I think as long as you add more than just a filter you should be ok. Contribute more to the image by adding more designs and text within the image.

Don’t Change Images To Make People Look Bad

If the image has a person in it and you want to use it for your print on demand business, or anything else. Don’t change the photo in a way that makes them look bad.

For example, if you take an image that has a model in it, you can’t use that image to promote alcohol products or any products that may make the model look bad.

Don’t Use Any Images With Brands

If you see images with Nike in it, or any other brand, refrain from using these for your print on demand business.

Even with celebrities, don’t use images that suggest it’s about a certain celebrity or you can possible get hit with a copyright strike.

Do You Need To Give Credit To the Contributor

You don’t need to give credit to the contributor but it is definitely encouraged to do so if possible.

Easy Way To Add Value

An easy way to add value to a pixabay image is to use Canva. You can download the image, add the image to a design on canva, then you can add text and other things to the design to add value.

You can then take this design and save it with a transparent background (you’ll need a Canva pro account) and then upload it straight to Teespring, Redbubble or whatever print on demand service you create on.

Should You Start a Print On Demand Business

Print on demand is much like blogging, youtube and businesses like that. You need a lot of time up front. You also need to be able to create good designs (unless you outsource your designs).

If you can quickly edit images and add value, taking one pixabay image per day for twenty to thirty minutes and editing it to add value, you can have plenty of designs up in no time.
